Medellin’s Comuna 13 Colombia Most Dangerous Area
Medellin’s Comuna 13 Colombia Most Dangerous Area
BEFORE 2011: Medellin’s Comuna 13 was a fortress for criminals, accessing Distric 13 was difficult due to its Far-fella type location, drugs deals, extortion, kidnapping and also highed killers/hit-men hid-out there!
The rooftops provided great location to see who was coming into the “Comuna 13” District, criminals monitor the activity so the assassins could chill knowing it was near impossible for the police and military to aprehend them.
The problem was of course money for family’s, forcing some boys to take up arms as young as the age of 10, so if they survived into there 20’s they became expert gorilla fighters and accomplished murderers!
any chance of getting a job or leaving their neighborhoods, was dangerous as rival gangs were monitoring their territory, so if one got spotted you’d probably be shot!
Operation Orion
Information from the Corporation for Judicial Freedom (CJL) speak for the inesent victims of Operation Orion in which left one person dead, 28 injured and 355 arrested.[2]
This military raid into District 13, of Medellin, between 16th and 19th October 2002, there were than 1,500 troops alone with the Department of Administrative Security, Police special forces to fight the what is was and is known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), plus the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the People’s Armed Commandos (CAP) all operated in District 13, which was at the time one of the most dangerous District in the most dangerous city in the world!
But most of that has changed!
On June 8th 2018 I visited Medellin’s Comuna 13 I was accompanied by Britta teacher from the USA who had been hied by a school in Medellin. she has a good knowledge of the new Medellin and seemed to have a good repor with the locals in the area, from the lady selling Empernardas to talking to the locals about there thoughts on the new era!
Bare in mined just a few years ago, one would not have been straying to to the Far-Fellas of District 13.
Wed caught the Meto A line from Pabledo and changed to the Metro B line to San Javier
From there you can get a bus to the foot of District 13 a sort but somewhat steep walk to the star of Escalators, Yes that right Electric Stairs! These were put in by the Medellin government to increase accessibility to the steep maze of alleyways that made up the Far Fellas. It cost over £4 million, but the outcome has been better then anyone imaged!
